Iowa Watercolor Society

March 30 - May 25 Center for Faith and Life

The Iowa Watercolor Society is an incorporated, non-profit group that supports and encourages advancement of the watercolor medium and fosters appreciation and interest of both artists and the viewing public. This year marks the 25th annual exhibition for the Society. Eighty-eight artists submitted 165 slides for the juried show. Sixty works were selected for the opening exhibition held at the Des Moines Botanical Center during September, 2002. From that initial show, selected works were chosen to tour the state through August, 2003. Exhibit sites on this year's tour include (in order) the Kirkendall Library (Ankeny), the Charles City Arts Center, Lakes Art Center (Okoboji), Keokuk Art Center, Rivers Arts Center/Clinton Art Association, Luther College (Decorah), Jenison-Meacham Memorial Art Center (Belmond), Witter Gallery (Storm Lake), and the Octagon Center for the Arts (Ames). There are 33 works on display in the CFL, including landscapes, still lifes, figurative images, and abstracts.

Roberta Carter Clark juried this year's show. She has been affiliated with Portraits Incorporated in New York City for over 15 years and has painted portraits for clients across the country and in England. Her work has earned her many awards and memberships in Knickerbocker Artists, the Midwest Watercolor Society, the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, and the Rockport Art Association. She said, "In judging, I look for good design, personal color choices, and the ability to handle this elusive medium, but most of all I admire an original concept. Originality seems to me to be the most rare of all qualities for a painter. We are bombarded with so many images in our everyday life it becomes more and more difficult to look inside and find what we rally care about, what we want to say in our paintings."
