Brian Harper: New Ceramic WorkOct 27 - Dec 12Kristin Wigley-Fleming Gallery gallery reception Wed, Nov 5, 4:30 p.m. Brian Harper received his BFA from Northern Arizona University in 2001. He is currently a candidate for the MFA at the University of Iowa, where he has been the recipient of Iowa Arts Fellowships the past two years and currently serves as a graduate teaching assistant in ceramics. His work has been featured in several exhibitions, most recently the International Teabowl Invitational at the Northern Arizona University Art Museum in Flagstaff; the St. Petersburg Clay National in Florida; and Ceramics 2003 at the Guilford Handcraft Center in Connecticut. His work focuses on the interaction of large sculptural objects and their relationship to the environment. "These forms have a strange and ambiguous power about them. They are massive, yet humble. They are simple, yet mysterious. In this work I am taking inspiration from the monolithic stone workings of various cultures including prehistoric Russia, England, Scotland, Ireland and many others. For example, Stonehenge has a very elaborate and complicated relation to various celestial events, but what impresses me the most is the sheer beauty of the simplicity of those stones. There seems to me to be some sort of authenticity in that simple beauty, for it takes away illusion and reveals something true."
