Visible Vocations

"Vocation" is a term that has been widely discussed at Luther College over the past three years. Much of the conversation has focused on defining vocation and understanding its relationship to career and occupation. Vocation lies at the intersection of the eternally perplexing questions, "Who am I?" and "Why am I here?" Together, they echo the theme of Luther College's Sense of Vocation program: "What am I meant to do with my life?"

A variety of works from the Luther College Fine Arts Collection are included in the "Visible Vocations" exhibit. The paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures depict people in a variety of positions, ranging from extraordinary and public calls of leadership and service to the more ordinary, but no less noble, roles most of us perform. Works have been grouped into six general catagories: religious callings, labor, the arts, leadership, exploration, and other. There is no hierarchy intended in the groupings, nor are they presented as comprehensive. Rather, they offer a unique lens for viewing the notion of vocation, and their range reflects as much as anything the pool of available artworks in the Fine Arts Collection.

This exhibit was made possible, in part, with support from the "A Sense of Vocation" program at Luther College. Conservation of the portrait, Martin Luther, was completed by the Upper Midwest Conservation Association, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Other public events related to the "Visible Vocations" exhibit include a March 22 chapel talk by Jane Kemp, Librarian and Supervisor of the Luther College Fine Arts Collection. "Artistic Vocation: Arne Berger," will take place at 10:00 a.m. in the Center for Faith and Life. There will also be a gallery reception May 7, 4:00 p.m. in Hovde Lounge. That event will coincide with the final Poems for Friday reading of the school year, and include comments on the exhibit by David Kamm, Gallery Coordinator.
